Onsite Support Technician II

Overview

The Onsite Support Technician II is an experienced field technician who handles JPtheGeek's day-to-day onsite work at client locations. When something needs hands in the building — a workstation deployment, a hardware replacement, a printer or network issue that couldn't be fixed remotely — this is who we send.

This is a mid-level technical role. You've done onsite work before, you can walk into an unfamiliar site and get your bearings, and you don't need someone standing over your shoulder for routine calls. You'll work from assignments and priorities set by the Onsite Support Team Lead, escalate cleanly when something is beyond scope, and support Help Desk, Systems Administration, and Professional Services on work that requires physical presence.

It's a good fit for a technician who likes being out in the field, takes pride in tidy work, and wants to keep building skills toward senior field, systems, or specialty roles.

How This Role Shows Up Day-to-Day

• Running scheduled onsite visits and dispatch calls across our client base

• Deploying and replacing workstations, laptops, printers, and peripherals

• Installing and swapping network hardware — switches, access points, and firewalls — following provided configurations

• Troubleshooting connectivity, hardware, and Windows issues that Help Desk couldn't resolve remotely

• Assisting with server, camera, access control, and cabling installs alongside senior field staff

• Running and terminating cable, dressing racks, and labeling equipment to our standards

• Coordinating with Help Desk before and after visits so remote teams know what changed

• Documenting work performed, serials, IP assignments, and resolutions in the ticket before leaving the site

• Escalating to the Onsite Support Team Lead, Technical Specialist, or Systems Administration when an issue exceeds your scope

• Keeping your vehicle, tools, and stock organized, inventoried, and field-ready

What Success Looks Like (6–12 Months In)

• Routine onsite calls are handled reliably without needing rework or repeat visits

• Installs look clean, are labeled correctly, and match the documentation left behind

• Clients are comfortable with you onsite and comment on your professionalism

• Tickets are documented well enough that Help Desk can pick up where you left off

• You recognize when to escalate early instead of spending hours on something out of scope

• You're trusted with progressively more complex visits and project support

• Your site knowledge makes you a go-to for the clients you visit most

Who Will Thrive in This Role

• You take pride in workmanship — cable management, labeling, and cleanup matter to you

• You're professional and friendly in front of clients, including when things aren't going well

• You manage your own day well and communicate when a schedule needs to change

• You explain technical issues in plain language without talking down to anyone

• You ask for help at the right time rather than spinning on a problem alone

• You want to learn and are willing to be coached by senior technicians and the Team Lead

• You're reliable, punctual, and comfortable driving between sites

Experience that fits well here:

• 2–4 years of hands-on IT support experience, with at least some onsite or field work

• Solid skill with workstation and laptop hardware, imaging, and deployment

• Working knowledge of Windows desktop environments and Microsoft 365

• Practical networking fundamentals — DNS, DHCP, Wi-Fi, switches, and connectivity troubleshooting

• Some exposure to structured cabling, rack work, or physical installation

• Experience with cameras, access control, or alarm systems is a plus, not a requirement

• Comfort working in a ticketing system with consistent notes and time entry

• CompTIA A+ or Network+ is a plus; we'll support you in earning certifications

Physical Requirements

• Regularly lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs, occasionally more with assistance

• Comfortable with ladder work, cable pulling, and access to ceilings, closets, and crawl spaces

• Extended periods of standing, kneeling, bending, and working in tight spaces

• Consistent driving to client sites throughout the service area

Growth & Opportunity

This role is a step on the field track, not the end of it. With experience here, technicians commonly grow into Senior Onsite Support Technician, Onsite Support Team Lead, Technical Specialist, or Systems Administration. We invest in training, labs, and certifications for people who want to keep moving.
